Visiting Westport

What to see and do in Westport, Ireland

Croagh Patrick the most important pilgrimage spot in Europe Croagh Patrick is located in Westport, Ireland and it is said to be one of the most important pilgrimage spots in Europe. In ancient times, Celts used to climb this barefoot during the summer solstice in honor of one of their gods. Later on, Croagh Patrick is said to be the place where more than fifteen hundred years ago, St. Patrick spent forty days and forty nights fasting there. The locals also tell of a legend that St. Patrick built a little church there and after his fasting, he took the silver bell of the church and threw it off the mountain to crush a female demon. Even though the small chapel built by St. Patrick no longer exists, the authorities in the area constructed one in 1905 and one hundred years later a commemorative plaque was added to the summit. Since there are over sixteen thousands pilgrims climbing barefooted from April to October, nowadays the church is open for visitors all day long during the summer months. If you plan to join a pilgrimage at the Croagh Patrick summit, then consider dressing appropriately to the weather, as climbing without shoes or shirts has lead to a few cases of hypothermia in the past.
