Visiting Trim

What to see and do in Trim, Ireland

The Trim Castle or the best Trim of Anglo Norman architecture in Ireland The famous Trim Caste is one of the few architectural masterpieces that remained of the Anglo Norman design and style. This castle is also the main place where the shooting of Mel Gibsonís "Braveheart" took place, hence if you want to have a chance of walking in the footsteps of the famous hero and the great director, you should definitely plan at least one vacation day in the area. The castle dates back to the 11th century when it was chosen as the main place for Norman Administration, thanks to its high ground overlooking the River Boyne. The Trim Castle was built by Henry II of England as a gift for Huge de Lacy. Later on, during the Middle Ages, it was the center administration point of Meath. However, the castle lost its importance and lingered in obscurity for almost two centuries afterwards until it started to be used by Dunsany Plunketts. The followers of Dunsany sold the castle to the state and, after a few renovations, it has been opened to the public since 2000. If you want to check out the interior and beauty of the castle, it is recommended that you visit it between April and October, when its gates are opened to the public.
