Visiting Listowel

What to see and do in Listowel, Ireland

Listowel – the town where the Irish claimed their independence. The War of Independence, one of the most important events in Ireland’s history, took place in the 1920s. It all began in the city of Listowel when the members of the Royal Irish Constabulary refused to obey the relocation orders of the commanding police chiefs. Nowadays, the event is known as the Listowel Mutiny and you can learn all about it in the memorials and museum around the town of Listowel. At the same time, the town of Listowel is also famous because it hosted the world’s first monorail operations. The very first railway was built based on the Lartigue system with a double engine steam locomotive and since 2003 visitors can see a kilometre long replica of the original monorail. The history of the town of Listowel dates back since the 12th century and the ex-fortress of the Fitzmaurice family, the Listowel Castle, stands witness to all battles and day to day life of this twelve square miles. The entire town was built and expanded around this magnificent square structure. Nowadays, only two of its original four towers are still intact, however, the renovations and restoration process has only begun in 2005. Listowel is famous for the remarkable number of authors who have lived there.
