Visiting Clonakilty

What to see and do in Clonakilty, Ireland

Visit the hometown of the IRA leader, Michael Collins. The town of Clonakilty (locally known as Clon) is a tidy and welcoming town, three kilometres away from the most popular and largest beaches in West Cork. But the city is famous mostly as the home of Michael Collins. Collins was one the leader of the IRA, and later the Irish Free State movement. He never stopped fighting for the independence of Ireland, and remains one of Irelandís leading historical figures, and the Clonakilty authorities dedicated the famous statue in the centre of Clonakilty town to him in 2002. Clonakilty is a busy market town, but if you take a west turn of the town you will immediately discover a large succession of bays and peninsulas along the coastline and the mountain terrain. The views are simply out of this world. The western parts of Clonakilty are also the location of the Inchydoney Beach, a fine unspoiled beach that also includes a small surfing school. In addition, if you explore the area a bit further, you will come across one of Ireland's most ancient monuments, a standing stone circle called the Drombeg Stone Circle.
