Visiting Cashel

What to see and do in Cashel, Ireland

The city built on a rock! The Rock of Cashel is an isolated elevation of stratified limestone that emerges beautifully in the fertile valley in the South Tipperary county of Ireland. In its early history this bastion rock was known as the St. Patrick’s Rock and it is still called that by most inhabitants of Cashel. The Rock of Cashel is dated since the 5th century, when it has provided the stratified means of defense of the High Kings of Munster against the Norman invasion. Even though there is very little architectural evidence of the 5th century life there, tourists can enjoy a bundle of homes and structures that combine the Germanic and Hiberno-Romanesque influences of the 12th century architecture. Nowadays, the Rock of Cashel includes a natural cultural center at the foot of the structure that has a lot of information to offer regarding the Celtic culture in the region. Bru Boru is designed around the green village and it includes a genealogy center, folk theater, a restaurant and other amenities. At the same time it represents the reunion spot of Irish folk and traditional singers and actors that meet there once a year to study and celebrate the rich Irish and Celtic culture.
