Visiting Birr

What to see and do in Birr, Ireland

See what is left of the 8th century monastery created by St. Brendan at the beautiful heritage town of Birr. For history lovers all over the world, the city of Birr is the location where the Synod of Birr took place in 697 and the birthplace of the famous Gospels of McRegol, that are available for public viewing today in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. However, the city of Birr still has many other attractions to offer its visitors after approximately twelve centuries of continuous existence. First of all, Birr is one of the few designated Heritage towns in Ireland due to abundance of Georgian style buildings and houses from as far back as 1740. In addition, the city of Birr is home to the many pioneering achievements of the Parson Family. These are currently on display at the Birr Castle Demesne. The castle is exactly where you are going to find the largest telescope built in the early 1840s by the Third Earl of Rose. And that is not all: the Demesne castle is also the home of the most beautiful gardens in the entire Republic of Ireland. Recently restored, these amazing gardens include fifty hectares of rare trees and plants that you cannot find anywhere else in the world.
